Dear Mountain Bikers !,
Cilegon will be no longer known just by its Krakatau (Krakatoa) Volcano, or its Krakatau Steel Plant.
In the last few months, mountain bike communities around Serang - Cilegon - Merak have been working together trying to develop a mountain bike haven in a location called Gunung Pinang.
Gunung Pinang is in fact a conservation area, a very thick and shady forest hill, measuring 240 m above sea level on its highest point (not including its BTS communication towers on the top).
Working together with the local Forestry Ministry office, we have so far developed 2 Cross Country (XC) tracks, and one Downhill (DH) course.
The Tracks :The XC tracks featuring various technical spots from off-camber, roller-coasters, drop-offs, super-bowls, sandy climbs, speed jumps, etc. Length from 3.5km (XC-1) to 4.2km (XC-2) per lap. These tracks are guaranteed to satisfy your thirst on XC challenges.
Downhill course starts from the launching deck on the top (240m altitude) down to finish line at the base of Gunung Pinang (6 m altitude), total length at 2.1km. Amongs the technical obstacles you need to clear off in this course are speed jumps, drop-offs, double jumps, sharp bends, and the notorious super-steep, long and very loose descent. They are sure to drain your adrenalins dry. Some senior downhillers even voted this course as "the best downhill course tested" so far.
Location, how to get there :When you are on km 84 - 86 of the Jakarta - Merak Toll road, you will see Gunung Pinang on your left. Looks like a small mountain with 2 communication tower (BTS) on the top. You have to exit the toll at the Cilegon Timur gate, then just follow the road down to junction with the Cilegon - Merak main road (appr. 1500m from the gate). Then turn left, heading Serang city direction. The entrance to Gunung Pinang is appr. 3km from this junction, at the right side of the road.
The modified Google map below (courtesy of Om Igo M.) may help. The violet line is the Jakarta - Merak toll road, while the yellow line is the path you need to follow as soon as you get out of the Cilegon Timur toll gate.
The environment :The whole length of tracks, both XC and DH are in the shade of the forest. So, you won't get exhausted quickly, and you can do laps after laps, from early morning until late afternoon without worry to get sunburnt (who cares anyway?, well, I do).
